Two rollers applying a coloured coat to brick-pattern stamped concrete

Patio Painting in Malaga for Terraces and Pool Surrounds

Patio painting gives the place where you eat, sit and sunbathe one fresh, even colour again, without ripping up the concrete or the furniture plan around it. We wash the terrace, repair cracks and chipped edges, cut in along walls and planters, and finish with two coats of synthetic resin paint.

Why recolour a patio instead of retiling or relaying it?

Because in most cases the patio is not broken, it is just tired. Patio colour restoration deals with what you actually see, the faded and blotchy surface, while leaving the sound concrete base exactly where it is.

Retiling or relaying means breaking out, removing rubble, a new base and days of noise next to the living room. Recolouring keeps the terrace in use as soon as the coating allows, and it does not disturb the levels, drains or doorsteps that were set when the house was built.

If the patio has sunk, cracks keep widening or water sits in hollows, painting will not cure it; that needs repair or relaying first.

Which patios and terraces do we paint?

We recolour exterior patios and terraces in plain concrete, imprinted concrete and concrete pavers. Typical spaces are:

  • The main terrace off the living room, where dining tables and loungers sit.
  • Pool surrounds, where colour and grip need to be considered together.
  • Courtyards and small townhouse patios, where a lighter tone can make the space feel larger.
  • Roof-level or raised terraces with a concrete floor, if the surface is sound and drains properly.
  • Barbecue and outdoor kitchen areas, after grease has been cleaned off as far as possible.

The photo above shows why concrete patio painting is so satisfying to watch: the brick pattern was there all along, but only the freshly coated area shows it clearly. Once both coats are on, the joints of the pattern read sharply again and the whole terrace looks deliberate rather than worn.

Not every patio qualifies. Tiled terraces, natural stone and surfaces with active leaks below are outside our service, and we say so up front.

How do we prepare a patio before painting?

We start by clearing what can be moved and pressure washing the whole surface, because patios collect a mix of dirt that driveways do not: food and drink spills, sun cream, barbecue grease, leaves and the green film that grows under pots.

Cracks, chipped steps and loose edges are then repaired, and the line along the house walls, planters, pool coping and steps is cut in by brush. Only then does the colour go on, in two coats.

Our preparation guide explains why each step matters, and if your patio is stained with oil or rust, our sister site on pressure washing covers what cleaning can and cannot remove.

Which colour suits a Spanish villa patio?

The best patio colours pick up something that will never change: the roof tiles, the stone of a wall, the frame of the windows or the edge of the pool. A terrace that matches the house feels finished; one that contrasts for no reason looks like an afterthought.

  • Warm terracotta and sand tones sit comfortably with whitewashed walls and traditional tiles.
  • Mid and dark greys look crisp next to modern white villas and hide everyday dirt well.
  • Lighter tones brighten a shaded courtyard but show footprints and spills more readily.
  • Darker colours feel warmer under bare feet in strong sun, which is worth bearing in mind around a pool.

The sheen changes the mood too. Our colour and finish guide goes through how gloss and satin look on a terrace and what to ask about grip.

What about painting around the pool?

Pool surrounds can be recoloured, but they need more thought than any other patio. People walk on them barefoot and wet, so the slip resistance of the finish is the first question, not the colour.

Slip ratings are stated on the product data sheet (to be verified for each product), and we only propose a coating whose sheet supports the use. We also keep paint and wash water out of the pool during the job, and we will tell you if natural stone coping is better left untouched.

How do we fit patio painting around your stays and rentals?

You will probably want the terrace done between visits or between guests, not in the middle of a holiday. We agree the dates with you, plan the work so furniture can be moved back as soon as the data sheet allows, and keep you updated with photos if you are not in Spain.

For holiday lets, a freshly recoloured terrace is one of the most visible improvements you can make before the season. Our article on what it is like to work with us from abroad explains the practical side.

What decides the cost of patio painting?

Area, condition and detail decide the cost. A simple open terrace is quicker than a patio full of planters, steps, columns and borders, each of which needs brushwork. If the steps and paths leading to the terrace are to be included, quoting them together keeps the colour consistent across the whole outdoor space.

Cleaning, repairs and the two coats are included in the standard job. The indicative rate per square metre is on our pricing site, and the related services for driveways and paths and block paving work the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Can you paint an imprinted concrete patio?

Yes. Imprinted concrete patios are very good candidates for recolouring. After washing and crack repair, the two coats bring the stone, brick or slate pattern back into focus. If the pattern itself is badly worn or the surface is breaking up, we will tell you whether recolouring still makes sense.

Do I have to move all the furniture?

The floor needs to be clear while it is cleaned and painted, so tables, loungers and pots have to go elsewhere for the duration. Very heavy fixed items, such as built-in barbecues or planters, are cut in around rather than moved. We agree this before the job so nothing comes as a surprise.

Will the painted patio get hot in the sun?

Any outdoor floor in strong sun warms up, and darker colours generally feel warmer under bare feet than lighter ones. Around a pool, that is worth weighing up alongside how well the colour hides dirt. We explain the trade-off so you can choose with your own use of the terrace in mind.

Can you paint a patio with tiles?

No. Our service covers concrete, imprinted concrete and concrete block paving. Ceramic, porcelain and natural stone tiles behave very differently and are outside what we do. If your terrace mixes concrete and tiles, we can recolour the concrete parts and cut in neatly along the tiles.

Can the patio be used during the work?

Not the part being painted. Areas being washed, repaired or coated need to stay clear until the product data sheet says they can take foot traffic. On larger terraces it is sometimes possible to work in sections so access to the house is kept; we plan this with you.

What if the patio has a fall towards a drain?

The fall stays exactly as it is, because painting does not change the levels. Drain grilles and channels are cut in carefully so the coating does not block them. If water already ponds in hollows, painting will not solve that, and we would mention it when we see the photos.

Can you paint a raised terrace above a room?

A concrete terrace over living space can be recoloured if the surface is sound, but our coating is not a waterproofing membrane. If there are leaks into the room below, that is a waterproofing problem to solve first with a specialist. We would not paint over it and call it fixed.

Will grease from the barbecue area come out?

Fresh grease often lifts well with cleaning, but old, deep grease stains can remain in the concrete and affect the paint above them. We look at close-up photos and tell you honestly whether the area can be painted reliably or needs more intensive cleaning first.

Can you match the patio to the driveway?

Yes, and it often looks best when the terrace, paths and drive share one colour or two related tones. Doing them together also means one preparation phase and one set of brushwork along shared edges. Tell us which areas you want included and we will quote them together.

Do you do patio painting outside Malaga?

Yes. We are based in Marbella and work across Málaga province, including the western Costa del Sol, the coast towards Fuengirola and Benalmádena and the Axarquía towns. Send your location with the photos and we will confirm we can reach you.
